The residents and staff at Carlyle Place senior living community in Macon come from many backgrounds and traditions. Yet, they all have one thing in common: a spirit of gratitude and giving back all year long.
As we usher in the Thanksgiving season—a time of reflection, appreciation, and community—we thought we’d take a moment to showcase how Carlyle Place fosters purposeful living and connection through volunteerism and shared celebration.
Honoring Our Veterans
Carlyle Place has never forgotten that this hallowed day means acknowledging the courage and dedication of those who defend our nation’s sovereignty.
Every year on Veterans Day—and Memorial Day, too—our Macon Life Plan Community celebrates resident veterans by holding a special ceremony in our Grande Ballroom. The veterans arrange many of the program’s elements, which include invocations, guest speakers, and patriotic music. Past observances have also included a slideshow honoring current Carlyle Place veterans, as well as a presentation of colors by local Boy Scout Troops.
Our residents also remember those who are still serving by making cards for active U.S. military members in coordination with the USO. It’s our way of saying “thanks” to the brave men and women who continue to guarantee our freedom and safety.
Bringing Thanksgiving to Deserving Families
During Thanksgiving, people come together to celebrate and express gratitude for their many blessings. However, this time of year can be challenging for families experiencing food insecurity.
To help address this problem, Carlyle Place residents and staff participate in a yearly “Stuff the Turkey Food Drive,” which supports local food banks in Macon community. The goal is to “stuff” a collection bin with nonperishable food items like gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, and other traditional holiday favorites. Collected food is then used to create complete Thanksgiving meal kits for individuals and families who might otherwise go without.
Giving Back to Our Staff Members at Holiday Time
For the residents of Carlyle Place, December is packed with opportunities for putting gratitude into action, and it all starts with our Employee Gift Distribution Party. This event is a celebration of the fellowship and appreciation that residents have for our exceptional staff members who go above and beyond the call of duty every day.
Throughout the year, residents donate money to our Employee Gift Fund. When December rolls around, the funds are distributed to every employee (excluding administrators) based on the total number of hours worked throughout the year. From nurses and cooks to cleaners and van drivers, everyone goes home with warm feelings inside.
A Charitable Spirit That Shines All Year Through
At Carlyle Place, gratitude is more than a feeling—it’s a way of life. We believe there’s always room to make the world a better place, and we’re delighted that so many of our residents feel the same way.
Together, the people who live here have volunteered thousands of hours to community service projects like these:
- Delivering lunches for Loaves & Fishes, a local faith-based organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for the poor and homeless.
- Making handmade tie blankets, which are donated to a local children’s hospital.
- Providing Christmas gifts for children in need through the Salvation Army Angel Tree Project.
- Raising funds for the American Heart Association and the Alzheimer’s Association.
- Helping to run a community recycling program that has kept more than 100,000 pounds of cardboard and other materials out of landfills.
Engaging in charitable activities benefits our residents, too. Studies have shown that volunteering stimulates cognition by involving problem-solving, learning new skills, and sharing knowledge with others. It also reduces the risk of social isolation by building friendships and strengthening community ties. A true win-win situation.
